I am a consultant for a highly successful skin care company; therefore I spend a great deal of time urging women to use products that have been proven to help in keeping their skin in good condition. I believe that it is important to invest time and money in maintaining a clear healthy skin. Proper cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and protection are vital components in achieving that goal. However, I have become increasingly cognizant of the correlation between a person’s lifestyle and how she or he looks and feels.

While there are many contributors, some beyond our control, that affect our overall appearance and that of our skins in particular, I am going to mention several that are among the choices we generally can make on a daily basis.

First and foremost, maintain a healthy diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables. Eat them raw when possible and keep the preparation simple. A beautiful salad smothered in a thick creamy dressing loses its nutritional value, primarily because you have loaded it with fat and calories. Vegetables fried or over cooked or in a sauce suffer the same fate. Chose lean cuts of meat and opt for fish more often than red meat. Eat whole grains and avoid processed white flour, sugar, and salt. Hydrate your body with an ample supply of fluids, especially water. Take time to research the wise use of supplements. No matter how we try, it is very difficult to achieve all of our nutritional goals through our foods.

Find creative ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. You can run, walk, dance, garden, or just move. Do whatever works for you. Use weights regularly to build and maintain muscle. Keeping your body strong and active slows the aging process and keeps you healthy and alive, physically and mentally.

Try to get seven to eight hours sleep every night. Recent research bears out the vital importance of sleep in maintaining both mental and physical health.

Finally, never smoke as it is a habit that is devastating to your entire body; use alcohol in moderation; and keep your weight at or near the recommended level for your height.
